Complexity, Humanities, Art, Societies – CHArt[S]

This research axis lies at the interface between the mathematical sciences and the humanities & social sciences. We put the emphasis on the co-production of methods and tools for the analysis and modelling of complexity in human systems (in the broadest sense possible). We aim at shedding light on their dynamics and thus provide a scientifically sound basis for decision-making processes in matters of public policies as well as for individual and collective choices. Somewhat originally, we also approach with a mathematical eye questions that pertain to art and design, in particular: visualization, art history, and cultural heritage conservation. Building on the radically interdisciplinary nature of CHArt[S], we therefore explore and expand the boundaries of transverse concepts that belong to many a field – the notion of style being one example thereof.

Methods

CHArt[S] examplifies the collective and multidisciplinary spirit that prevails at Centre Borelli and that makes it such a unique research centre. Far from considering it possible to “solve”(!) any particular problem in the humanities and the social sciences by the simple transposition of a model coming from mathematics, statistics or physics, we engage in multidisciplinary work that seek to co-produce new approaches. This is done with the same freedom encountered in physics or biology as far as the variety of methods is concerned: statistical modelling, machine learning, stochastic modelling, dynamical systems, network analysis, simulations, …
