A world record challenge for the ENS Paris Saclay !

On Saturday May 27, 2023, ENS Paris Saclay, in collaboration with University College Dublin, the Marine Institute, Eire Composite and the Inishmaan community, will attempt to set a record for the furthest maritime broadband transmission without satellite or cellular connection. This is part of the SeaFi project, a key element of the ERC Highwave project led by Professor Frederic Dias.

The SeaFi Challenge 2023

At sea, fishermen and other sailors have only two options to communicate: satellite or cellular systems such as the 3G used by your cell phone. SeaFi's aim is to facilitate the creation of private networks in ports and coastal areas by establishing connections between lighthouses, offshore wind turbines or drilling platforms and ships at sea. These networks can connect ships and their crews, as well as data collection buoys (weather, tides), for example.

In 2018

Arnaud Disant develops a technology and a scientific world record for the furthest wireless Internet communication at sea was established between Rochespoint lighthouse and the Offshore Supply Vessel Ocean Spey, with 19.4 nautical miles (35.92 km).

Saturday May 27, 2023

Arnaud Disant challenges his own record with Frédéric Dias, mathematician and professor at ENS Paris-Saclay (Centre Borelli/University College Dublin), who is taking an active part in this adventure with a view to valorizing the work carried out as part of his ERC Proof of Concept Grant project, HIGHWAVE (2022).

SeaFI and HIGHWAVE

This project SeaFi plays an important part in the HIGHWAVE project: a part of this project consists in setting up an experimental device for measuring breaking waves at sea.

Inishmaan Island

The Aran Island Research Station installed on Inishmaan Island, 20 km from the west coast of Irland, is exceptionally open to the public on this occasion.

Challenge Partners and participants

In addition to Frédéric Dias, the other participants are

  • Sr Research Engineer Arnaud Disant (UCD & ENS-PS),
  • Dr Syed Ahmad Hasan (UCD),
